Austin, TX
Very lucky to have been able to have spent a rich chapter of my life in Austin while attending one of the best universities in the world, hook ‘em. Time flies in a place like Austin, and whether you’re chowing on bbq or tacos it’s bound to be fun along the way. I’ve only scratched the surface as far as music venues in Austin go, but I do a bit better when It comes to nature spots paired with food and drink.
Walk or Lime along Ladybird Lake’s boardwalk with picture perfect views of downtown, and if you’re feeling adventurous Pace and Muleshoe Bend Recreational Areas are less than an hour West toward Lakeway for more views of the hill country. If you have time before catching the Longhorns game, the wineries outside Fredericksburg (1 hr away) are comparable to those of Napa and other greats. Stop in for a pairing at Calais where we’re able to chat with the winemaker, or Kulhman for a first class experience with a view. Fredericksburg has an ideal downtown to stroll through and browse the shops for a taste of pecan pie butter or peach jelly when in season. Be sure to leave yourself enough time after a day exploring wineries.
Austin nightlife is boundless with something for everyone in the family. For all ready for something sweet head to Gordough’s gourmet doughnut house, and thank me later. The most decadent pastries come piled high on the plate, are surely big enough to split, and you should but you won’t. The mingling of the topping flavors is unmatched, but also the doughnut maintains the identity you want with a crisp outer casing around a pillow like pastry. When it’s time for a nightcap, mosey on over to the Firehouse Lounge for a classy cocktail perched on plush leather couches. If you time it right live music will grace the crowd. If your throat is still dry, and want a change of scenery the White Horse or Hotel Vegas on the East side will be hopping. Rainey St popular spots like Container Bar and Bungalow will keep a hip vibe for some of the college folk.
