In all of Asia, Jeepneys in the Philippines were my favorite method of travel.   It sounds quirky, but I always figure out how to use public transportation and I love the process.  There’s something satisfying about maneuvering a huge metropolis just like the locals, undoubtedly saving some $$, and not having to deal with a cab driver trying to work you over.

I had never heard of Jeepneys until I started to research how to get around the Philippines, and once I saw pictures I was so pumped to try them out.  No doubt legacy of the American occupation, these ‘souped’ up Jeeps with extended back ends for passengers also have intricate designs spray painted on the side making each one unique.  I saw some seriously impressive body work while walking around Manila.

They’re super easy to use.  The route the Jeepney takes is painted to the side of the vehicle, and it’s normally points of interest within the city like a big supermarket or larger transport terminal. I never got lost (with the help of some Filipinos pointing me in the right direction).  They’re so nice if you look confused at all they’ll make sure you get on the right track, and no doubt you’ll receive some respect from them when you’re riding in the cab as most tourists opt for personal trikes (tuk-tuks) or taxis.

Jeepneys are by far the most reasonably priced mode of transport as most routes in cities will only cost 7-15 Filipino pesos (.14-.30 USD) and long distance Jeepney rides taking hours can be anywhere from 50-150 pesos ($1-3 USD).  Save money so you can eat more BBQ and halo-halo.

The last fantastic aspect of these vessels is the honor system of payment.  There’s anywhere from 10-24 people in the back of these, and the prices are set.  People in the rear pass their pesos up through 5, 6, or 7 hands up to the driver and his assistant.  If they paid with a big bill they’ll hand the change all the way back down the line!  The cooperation was great to see.

Moral of the story – if you’re in the Philippines, take Jeepneys.  If you don’t know what to do take a Jeepney to a random part of the city and find a bakery or a park to relax and soak up the sun.
